Ross Smith, the Motability Scheme stakeholder executive

Healthcare professionals

Motability could help give your patients everyday freedom. Here’s all you need to know about the Scheme as a healthcare professional.

“I provide a gateway into the Motability Scheme for healthcare and disability organisations.”

Ross has been on the Motability Scheme for over 20 years and now works as Scheme Stakeholder Executive for Motability Operations. In this role he has a particular focus on healthcare professionals.

“I'm evangelical about the Scheme’s benefits as well as the quality and breadth of choice, support and service it offers. Seeing this ‘from the inside’ I'm even more impressed and I want to spread the message!”

Ross has worked with and for the NHS for many years. He supported people with severe and enduring mental health conditions and helped them get back into paid employment.

Ross used to be a Disability Consultant for Hampshire County Council. There, he focused on access, inclusion and helping disabled people recruit personal assistants. He’s also been on a variety of boards for companies looking to enhance the lives of disabled people.

“I look forward to working with you, to share the unparalleled benefits of the Scheme with the people you support.”

We'll help you support your patients

How we support healthcare professionals

Just over a third of eligible people are on the Scheme, but anyone who receives a qualifying mobility allowance can join.

The people who are not could be using their allowance for other life priorities or have made other mobility arrangements. But for many, it’s because they do not know they're eligible or because they do not realise what the Scheme has to offer.

They can use their allowance to get a brand-new car, Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle), scooter or powered wheelchair far cheaper than elsewhere. And a full, worry-free package. That includes insurance and breakdown cover. Around two thirds of our customers drive, but non-drivers can lease a car as a passenger too. Parents or carers can also apply for a child aged three and above.

How you can help your patients

We believe healthcare professionals have a valuable role to play. You can let your patients know that the Scheme might be an option, how it works and how it could help them.

Once you’ve seen how it works, you can use our tool to check if one of your patients is eligible.

Then explore our website and see what’s available. You’ll find everything someone new to Scheme will need to know.
