Good Condition Payment

You may get money back at the end of your lease if you return your car or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle) in good condition and meet a few other criteria.

What is the Good Condition Payment?

We build a small amount of money for the Good Condition Payment (GCP) into the cost of your lease as a form of guarantee, and return it to you at the end of your lease, if you do everything below.

How do I get it?

There are five things you need to do to get the Good Condition Payment.

  1. Take good care of your vehicle

This includes regularly servicing and taking care of any repairs before you give it back.

  1. Return important items

You’ll need to give your vehicle back at the end of your lease with these items:

  • The parcel shelf
  • Both sets of keys
  • Your charging cable, if you have an electric car

If you do not have one of these items anymore, you can speak to your dealer about getting a replacement. You can also make an insurance claim for lost keys, but you will need to pay your excess and it will count as a claim on your insurance history.

  1. Get an MOT

You must return your vehicle with a valid MOT at the end of your lease. You should arrange this with your dealer before you hand it back.

  1. Have settled any outstanding debts/charges

You’ll need to pay off any outstanding debts/charges with us. This could include hire car fines, speeding tickets, stopped allowances in arrears or unpaid recovery costs.

Otherwise, if the debt is less than the GCP, we’ll first use your GCP to help pay the debt, and then send the rest to you.

  1. Complete your lease

Your agreement will be for either three or five years. You’ll only get the GCP if you keep your vehicle for the whole of your lease, not if we agree to end it early.

Once you’ve completed the actions above and hand your vehicle back, your dealer will then take a photo and brief description of its condition and share this with us.

We know that over your lease your vehicle might show signs of wear and tear, including minor dents, scratches or damage caused by wheelchairs or other mobility aids.

How much will I receive?

The amount you receive depends on the length of the agreement you signed up to. It’s currently £250 for a three-year lease and £350 for a five-year lease.

These amounts do not change if you choose to extend your lease or keep your vehicle for longer.

Receiving your payment

We'll automatically send the GCP to you if you’re eligible to receive it, so there's no need to contact us.

The quickest way to receive this payment is by bank transfer. Make sure you update your bank details in your Motability Scheme online account. Sign in to your account and go to 'Personal details'.

If you’ve already added your bank details, please double check these are still correct before you return your vehicle. You can easily update these in your online account if they've changed.

Payments by bank transfer should arrive within five days of your car or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle being returned. If we do not have your bank details we’ll send you a cheque instead, but this can take up to 28 days to arrive.

Looking after your car or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle

There are some simple things you can do throughout your lease to make sure your car or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle performs well and stays in good condition.

Servicing is included in the cost of your lease and it’s important you answer any service requests from your dealer or supplier.

In between services, you should check these regularly:

  • Paintwork: wash the vehicle regularly
  • Lights: check they're clean and working properly
  • Engine oil level
  • Windscreen washer fluid level
  • Engine cooling system level
  • Tyres (including your spare, if you have one): check they’re at the right pressure and are not worn below the legal limit of 1.6mm

You should also:

  • Make sure all faults are put right with your dealer quickly
  • Answer any manufacturer recall requests. For example, if a faulty part needs replacing. If this happens, your manufacturer, dealer or supplier will get in touch with you
  • If you have any questions about maintaining your car or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle, please ask your dealer or supplier
