Which adaptations can I get and how do I get them?

Adaptations make our vehicles easier to use and more comfortable. They're divided into access, stowage and driving controls.

If you’re not sure which adaptations you need, speak to an adaptations installer or contact our customer services team to arrange a Driving Mobility assessment.

Many adaptations on the Motability Scheme are now available at no additional cost, as long as they’re fitted at the start of your lease. There might be an extra cost for larger, more complex adaptations.

You can also add adaptations during your lease, but you’ll need to let us know first and pay any costs directly to the adaptations installer.

If you’re not able to afford essential adaptations, Motability Foundation might be able to help.

Motability Foundation runs several Scheme-related Grant Programmes to support with the cost of Advance Payments and adaptations for people who are not able to afford the solution that they need to meet their disability needs.

All applications are means-tested to make sure the foundation supports those most in need of a charitable grant and that it helps as many people as possible.

If a vehicle helps you travel and meets your mobility needs, they cannot award you a larger grant to upgrade to a different one. If they did, fewer people would receive funding and they would not meet their responsibilities as a charity.

They’ll look for cost-effective solutions to meet your needs. They will not consider the fuel type you prefer, as it’s not a mobility need.

Manufacturers are shifting to electric, so there are more electric cars on the Scheme. These can offer better value for money than petrol or diesel vehicles.

Grants are awarded in line with the foundation's policies, after a Case Manager thoroughly considers the information you submit.

All grant awards are final unless you give extra, compelling information.

If an application does not meet the foundation's funding priorities, you will not get a grant.

You can find out more about grants and how to apply at motabilityfoundation.org.uk(opens in a new window).

If you’ve already submitted an application, you should receive a decision within 6 weeks. Please wait for your Case Manager to update you.

If you already have a Scheme vehicle with lots of adaptations, you might be able to extend your lease for up to two more years.

If you're eligible, you'll see this option in your online account once you're in the last three months of your lease.

We'll also explain your options in the letter we send to you around three months before the end of your lease. So you know, if you're already in an extended lease, we will not be able to extend it again.
