What is a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and how do I get it fixed?

Some diesel cars have a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). They catch bits of soot that come from the exhaust to lower air pollution from your car. They have an automated self-cleaning process that starts when you drive for 10 to 15 minutes at over 40mph.

If it gets blocked, a warning light will appear on your instrument panel. The light should turn off if you drive your car for 10 to 15 minutes at over 40mph. If not, take your car to your dealer.

Your dealer can help you decide if a diesel vehicle is right for you.
