WAV stands for Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle. This means you can travel in the vehicle while seat in your wheelchair

Our Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle Experience

If you’re thinking about getting a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle), you might be eligible for our Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle experience. This can help you decide if a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle is right for you.

What is a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle Experience?

Our Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle Experience gives you and your drivers a taste of what it's like to have a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle on the Scheme.

Driving or travelling in a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle can be very different to a standard car, so it helps to check it’s right for you first. It lasts for seven days and there’s no cost to have the experience.

How it works

You’ll talk to our customer services team first, then our partner Proximo will deliver a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle to your home. They’ll explain how the Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle works, to make sure you and your drivers are confident.

You can then use it for seven days, to help you decide whether it’s the best option for you. After the seven days, Proximo will collect the Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle from you. There’s no pressure to order after it’s over.

Things to consider

You’ll still need a home demonstration

The experience will help you understand what having a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle is like and guide you to the sorts of features you might need.

It’s not a replacement for a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle demonstration and it's important you still arrange home demonstrations with Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle suppliers to find the best model for your needs.

We cannot give you specific makes or models. The Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle we give you will depend on your needs and the vehicles Proximo have available.

We can only give you a passenger Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle. If you're interested in ordering a Drive From Wheelchair (DFW) or Internal Transfer (IT) Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle, please speak to a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle supplier so they can arrange a home demonstration.

Am I eligible?

If you’re on the Scheme, you’ll need:

  • To live in mainland UK, except for Northern Ireland
  • To not already have a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle
  • To be thinking about ending your lease to swap to a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle
  • Or within the last five months of your lease and seriously considering a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle
  • Space to park a second vehicle near your home, as you’ll still have your Scheme car during your experience
  • To not have had the Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle Experience before

If you’re not on the Scheme, you’ll need:

  • To live in mainland UK, except for Northern Ireland
  • To have a qualifying mobility allowance with at least 12 months left
  • To be able start your experience in the next two weeks
  • To not have had the Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle Experience before
  • We’ll need to check for any convictions or endorsements on your licence. This could affect whether you’re eligible

If you meet these and you want to find out more about the Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle Experience, call us on 0300 456 4566. Please have your wheelchair dimensions to hand, if you can.
